Endorsements come in districts where ECU’s message of reform can help win back the independent voter that Democrats have been losing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — End Citizens United (ECU) today endorsed Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-02), Brendan Kelly (IL-12), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Dan McCready (NC-09), and Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) for U.S. Congress.
“Too many members of Congress are wearing earmuffs made of special interest money. They’re not listening to the people they’re supposed to represent,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “These five candidates are committed to getting unlimited and secret special interest money out of politics so that everyday Americans can have their voices heard. Voters in these districts are searching for leaders who will work to unrig the system. We look forward to connecting our grassroots members with their campaigns to help win these pivotal seats next November.”
The endorsed candidates come from four competitive districts that Trump won and one that was taken by Romney in 2012. These swing districts contain the types of voters who respond to ECU’s message and who Democrats have been losing over the last several election cycles. ECU has conducted extensive polling and research which shows that among independent voters, the influence of special interest money in American politics is a major concern, trailing only national security. An agenda that includes reforming money in politics helps win back independent and unaffiliated voters better than traditional Democratic messaging, including rural and non-college voters.
ECU’s endorsement will help these candidates compete with high-spending special interest groups by connecting them with its grassroots members in their own states and districts, as well as to its national network of 380,000 small-dollar donors. With an average donation of $14, ECU is projected to raise $35 million for the 2018 election cycle.
ECU is a grassroots fueled organization giving a voice to millions of American families. The group is dedicated to overturning Citizens United and passing meaningful campaign finance reform that will return the power of government to the people.
