Scholten is rejecting corporate PAC money
Washington, D.C. — End Citizens United (ECU) today endorsed J.D. Scholten for Congress in Iowa’s fourth Congressional District. Scholten is highlighting his commitment to reform by running a grassroots-powered campaign and refusing corporate PAC money. He supports the For the People Act, a bold, sweeping anti corruption and ethics reform bill in Congress.
“Rep. Steve King continues to prove that he’s completely unfit to represent the people of IA-04,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Iowans want a representative who will work to lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, not spout racist and sexist rhetoric while cashing in corporate PAC checks. J.D. Scholten will hold corporate special interests accountable and give a voice to Iowans in Congress. End Citizens United is proud to endorse him and we look forward to helping him get elected in 2020.”
“In 2018, I hosted a town hall in each of the 39 counties in Iowa’s 4th district, allowing us the opportunity to listen to and learn from the voters,” said J.D. Scholten. “Too often, we heard from people across the political spectrum who were fed up with the corruption in Washington that rewards those who are wealthy and well-connected. That’s why it’s long overdue to get money out of politics, curb the influence of special interests, and replace dysfunctional politicians like Steve King who put their selfish ideology before the needs of our people. I’m proud to earn the endorsement of End Citizens United and I look forward to working together to ensure Iowa families know someone has their backs in Congress.”
During the 2018 election cycle, ECU spearheaded the movement among candidates to forgo corporate PAC money in their campaigns. In the 116th Congress, nearly 60 members are refusing to take corporate PAC money, which includes 27 members of the House freshman class who flipped their district.
ECU is dedicated to getting Big Money out of politics and fixing the rigged system in Washington so government works for all Americans. The reform group has four million members nationwide, including 5,100 in IA-04, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14. The early endorsement will allow ECU to connect its over 550,000 donors members with Scholten’s campaign to make sure he has the resources to win.
