End Citizens United Hires Matt Burgess as Executive Vice President

Jun 08, 2017

Washington, DC — End Citizens United (ECU) today announced the hiring of Matt Burgess as Executive Vice President. Matt will oversee ECU’s day-to-day operations and help guide the group as it expands its work electing champions of campaign finance reform to Congress.

Prior to joining ECU, Matt was the senior political strategist at Planned Parenthood during the 2016 cycle. Before Planned Parenthood, he was the national political director for Everytown for Gun Safety. In 2014, Matt served as campaign manager for Sen. Al Franken’s re-election campaign and in 2012 he was campaign manager for now-Sen. Maggie Hassan’s successful governor’s race. From 2007 to 2011, he served in the Political Department at EMILY’s List. Prior to that he worked for SEIU and served in senior roles on Senate, House and governor’s races across the country.

“We’re thrilled to have Matt join the team. He brings a breadth and depth of experience working in battleground states and fighting for progressive causes,” said Tiffany Muller, President and Executive Director of ECU. “As we prepare for 2018 and beyond, Matt will help us expand ECU as well as elect campaign finance reform champions to Congress and work with them to pass meaningful reforms that make government more accountable to the American people.”

“I am incredibly excited to join End Citizens United. Groups like ECU are leading the resistance and standing up to President Trump and his dangerous agenda on behalf of working families across the country. It’s also a pivotal moment for ECU as it continues to demonstrate that the grassroots can take on the special interests and win. I’m honored to help lead the team forward,”said Matt Burgess, Executive Vice President of ECU.

Burgess’ hire is a reflection of ECU’s growth following the 2016 election. It comes on the heels of four additional management-level hires in the communications, research and operations departments over the past four months. In April, the group announced that it is projected to raise $35 million for the 2018 cycle, entirely through small-dollar donations. The 2018 projection will surpass the $25 million it raised for the 2016 elections.

End Citizens United, a grassroots-powered reform group with three million members nationwide, was established in March 2015 to counter the disastrous effects of the Citizens United decision and protect the integrity of our elections against unlimited and undisclosed money.
