End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund Call on Congress to Prioritize Passage of For the People Act

Dec 02, 2020

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund sent a letter to leaders in the House and Senate urging them to make the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 949) a first priority in the 117th Congress. A historic anti-corruption, voting rights and ethics reform bill, H.R. 1 passed the House with unanimous Democratic support in March of 2019 under Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership. Despite unanimous support from Senate Democrats, Mitch McConnell has refused to even allow a debate on the bill.

Excerpts from the letter read:

This year, the American people voted in record numbers for a president-elect who believes our democracy works best when every vote is counted, and every voice is heard. Congress must deliver on this mandate by passing comprehensive reforms to ensure our democracy works for all of us, not just wealthy special interests.

On behalf of End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund and our more than four million members around the country, we believe the For the People Act (H.R. 1) is the best way to achieve that goal. This once-in-a-generation package of reforms passed the House in 2019 with unanimous Democratic support and its Senate companion (S. 949) has the support of every Democratic Senator.

Far too many Americans across the political spectrum believe their government no longer works for them. They see wealthy special interests dictating policy, politicians setting the rules for their own elections and making it harder for Americans to vote, and federal officials profiting off the public interest. The For the People Act is critical to restoring the public’s faith in our democratic institutions and ensuring everyone’s voice and vote is heard, counted, and protected.
