Urge Senate to act quickly and pass H.R. 1 counterpart S. 1

End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) Action Fund today praised House Democrats for passing the For the People Act (H.R. 1) — a critical package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms.

“House Democrats have once again passed the For the People Act, which would rein in big money in our politics; crackdown on political corruption; ensure accurate, secure elections; and protect voting rights,” said ECU // LAV Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “Washington has never been more broken. Today’s swift passage of this historic reform bill proves that the Democratic Party believes in making government work for the people.

“Americans across the country are fed up with the culture of corruption in Washington, and now they’re contending with an outright assault on their constitutional right to vote by Republican politicians desperately trying to hold onto power. Democrats won the House and Senate majorities by promising to strengthen democracy and make our government responsive and accountable to the people rather than corporate special interests. By prioritizing the passage of the For the People Act, House Democrats––led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren, and Congressman John Sarbanes––have made good on that promise,” Muller added. “Now it is time for the Senate to act quickly and pass the bill’s counterpart, S .1, so it can be signed into law.”

The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) has become a centerpiece of the Democratic agenda in Congress following the 2018 and 2020 elections when Democrats took and held the House and won back the Senate running on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. ECU and LAV have been leading the charge to pass this bold package of anti-corruption, voting and ethics reforms, working with candidates and elected officials to make pro-democracy reforms a top priority and encouraging Americans to demand that their congressional representatives pass the bill.

Over the last several years, ECU has advocated for the passage of the For the People Act through a nationwide grassroots campaign, paid communications, and partnerships with allied groups, candidates, and members of Congress. H.R. 1 has now been co-sponsored by every House Democrat two congressional sessions in a row. The Senate Democratic majority has also designated the legislation S. 1, the caucus’ first bill of the new Congress.
