End Citizens United // Let America Vote Applauds Introduction of Protecting Our Democracy Act

Sep 21, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement applauding the re-introduction of the Protecting our Democracy Act, an anti-corruption package that will improve accountability in government and restore faith in our democracy:

“We commend today’s re-introduction of the Protecting Our Democracy Act. At a time when politicians continue pushing the ‘Big Lie’ that undermines faith in our elections, it’s critical that Congress takes action to tackle corruption in Washington.

“The Protecting Our Democracy Act is an important bill that will root out corruption, ensure elected officials are held accountable, and help protect our democracy. We thank Chairman Schiff, Speaker Pelosi, Chairwoman Maloney, Chairman Yarmuth, and other co-sponsors for their leadership to ensure our representatives reflect the will of the people and remain free from corruption.”

The Protecting Our Democracy Act introduced today has three main components:

  • Preventing presidential abuses of power by restructuring presidential pardon power, ensuring no president is above the law, and enforcing the foreign and domestic emoluments clauses of the Constitution.

  • Restoring our system of checks and balances and strengthening accountability and transparency through stricter enforcement of congressional subpoenas, strengthening congressional budget authority, reigning in the power of Presidential Emergency Declarations through congressional oversight, protecting whistleblowers, requiring communications between the Department of Justice and the White House to be logged, and other regulatory agency enforcement mechanisms.

  • Protecting our elections by clarifying the definitions of foreign interference for campaigns and strengthening reporting measures.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act follows other important anti-corruption and voting rights bills that House Democrats have already passed this year. Senate Republicans have continued to filibuster any bill that protects the freedom to vote and counteracts corruption in our politics.
