End Citizens United // Let America Vote Applauds Reintroduction of Freedom to Vote Act

Jul 18, 2023

ECU // LAV led a historic $40 million advocacy campaign in support of the bill last Congress, helping push this once-in-a-generation transformational bill to near passage

ECU // LAV’s advocacy has made federal anti-corruption and voting rights legislation a top priority for Democrats since 2019

End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) Action Fund today praised House and Senate Democrats for reintroducing the Freedom to Vote Act in the 118th Congress. The bill is a transformational package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms that would limit big money in our politics, shine a light on dark money, crack down on corruption in both parties, and protect and expand access to the ballot box.

“We applaud Leader Schumer, Leader Jeffries, Congressman Sarbanes, Senator Klobuchar, Congressman Morelle, and the entire Democratic caucus for reintroducing the Freedom to Vote Act and upholding their commitment to making democracy reform the top priority for Congressional Democrats,” said ECU // LAV Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “The only way to safeguard and protect our democracy is to reject the abhorrent threats posed by election deniers and extremist MAGA Republicans and pass this bill.”

Muller added, “The Freedom to Vote Act serves as a stark contrast to Republicans’ deceptive and dangerous agenda. Their Big Lie wishlist, the ACE Act, is anti-voter, pro-dark money legislation that will disenfranchise millions of Americans and open the floodgates to even more out-of-control spending by billionaires and corporations in our elections. The Freedom to Vote Act will pull back the curtain on the dark money that is corrupting our politics—and it will ensure that the voice of the people is no longer drowned out by big political donors and special interests. These reforms will ensure that our government is always putting the interests of everyday families first.”

The Freedom to Vote Act, which upholds the main pillars for the For the People Act, has become a centerpiece of the Democratic agenda in Congress following the 2018 and 2020 elections when Democrats took and held the House and won back the Senate running on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. The recent waves of Republican-led voter suppression bills across the country designed to help the party hold onto power has increased the urgency to pass the bill.

ECU // LAV Action Fund has been leading the charge to pass this bold package of anti-corruption, voting and ethics reforms, working with candidates and elected officials to make pro-democracy reforms a top priority and encouraging Americans to demand that their congressional representatives pass the bill.

In 2021, ECU // LAV Action Fund partnered with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) on a historic $40 million campaign in support of the For the People Act/Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act. The push for federal anti-corruption and voting rights legislation became a top priority for Democrats. The bill passed the House and had majority support in the Senate.
