End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement supporting the move to ban members of Congress from trading stocks:
“House and Senate Democrats clearly recognize the problems that can arise when members of Congress are allowed to trade stocks. We fully support efforts to end this practice and call on Congress to move forward with legislation to do so.
“While many American families are struggling to pay bills and stay afloat during this pandemic, members of Congress often have access to insider information, and some have used it to benefit their own financial investments. It’s a gross abuse of power and corruption that highlights the need for stronger ethics rules. Members of Congress also have oversight over any number of issues in which they may have personal investments, creating serious conflicts of interest.
“Banning members of Congress from trading stocks would at a minimum prevent the appearance of clear conflicts of interest and at a maximum stop members from abusing the public’s trust for personal financial gain.”
