End Citizens United // Let America Vote Congratulates Bee Nguyen on Winning the Democratic Runoff for Georgia Secretary of State

Jun 21, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the results of the Democratic runoff for Georgia Secretary of State:

“Congratulations to Bee Nguyen on winning the Democratic runoff for Georgia Secretary of State. This is an important moment in Georgia. Americans want fair elections, where we all have the freedom to vote and make our voices heard on important issues. Unfortunately, Georgia is ground zero in a nationwide coordinated attack on that freedom. Radical Republicans are working to sabotage, rig, and overturn elections and silence the voice and vote of the people of Georgia they don’t agree with.

“As a member of the state legislature, Bee has fought these efforts, successfully overturning the ‘exact match’ voter registration law, which restored the freedom to vote for 53,000 Georgians and defended Georgia voters from Trump’s campaign lies and efforts to overturn the will of the people. As Secretary of State, she’ll work hard to protect access to the ballot and counter efforts from self-serving politicians to overturn the will of the people. We look forward to helping her win this November.”

Ngyuen will face off against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Raffensperger is a self-serving politician who put in place barriers to voting. He was inducted into the Let America Vote’s voter suppression Hall of Shame even before he backed Georgia’s anti-voting law, SB 202, which limits access to the ballot box by removing accessible methods of voting, criminalizing handing out water to voters waiting in line, and allowing partisan politicians to take control of election administration away from trusted local officials. He also opposes the Voting Rights Act which prohibits racial discrimination in voting.

ECU // LAV is a leading anti-corruption and voting rights group. The grassroots-funded political action committee raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle to elect candidates fighting to limit the influence of big money in politics and protect the freedom to vote. Bee Nguyen is part of its first ever “Democracy Defenders” program for preeminent Secretary of State and Attorney General candidates in the 2022 cycle. These constitutional officers are critical in the fight to combat dark money-fueled restrictive voting laws being passed across the country.
