End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Melanie Stansbury winning the special election in NM-01:
“Congratulations to Melanie Stansbury on her victory. Throughout her career, Melanie has proven her commitment to standing up to big corporations and special interests by rejecting corporate PAC money and pledging to support anti-corruption and voting rights legislation in Congress. Her voice is much-needed in Washington to eliminate the influence of corporate special interests and give the power back to New Mexico families. We look forward to working with Congresswoman-elect Stansbury in the fight to put New Mexico and the country above special interests and partisan politics and restore faith in our democracy.”
Stansbury has rejected money from corporations and their PACs since her first campaign for state legislator in 2018. In the New Mexico Legislature, Stansbury introduced legislation to create a legislative process review commission, which would promote legislative transparency and reduce reliance on lobbyists. Stansbury also supports the For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1), a comprehensive anti-corruption and voting rights bill that passed the House earlier this year and is making its way through the Senate.
ECU and LAV endorsed Melanie Stansbury in April because of her commitment to rooting out corruption. The group is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU merged with Let America Vote, a grassroots organization that is fighting to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing pro-democracy Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU and LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 8,900 in NM-01, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
