Peterson rejects corporate PAC money

End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) today endorsed Karen Carter Peterson in Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District’s special election. Peterson is rejecting corporate PAC money, saying that “our work in Washington should be about the people, not special interests.”

“As a Louisiana state senator and representative, as well as the DNC Vice Chair of Civic Engagement and Voter Participation, Karen Carter Peterson has been a strong advocate of stricter government ethics laws and voting rights,” said ECU // LAV President Tiffany Muller. “By rejecting corporate PAC money, Peterson is proving that she’s serious about tackling the culture of corruption in Washington that prevents progress on critical issues impacting Louisiana families. We need voting rights and reform champions like Karen Carter Peterson in Congress, and that’s why we’re proud to endorse her.”

“Too many politicians are more focused on satisfying their corporate donors and mega-donors than solving the problems their constituents face,” said Sen. Karen Carter Peterson. “Popular and necessary pro-worker policies like affordable healthcare and good paying jobs will never get through Congress when representatives are beholden to corporate special interests. In Congress, I will fight to make our government work for Louisiana families by passing pro-democracy reforms like the For the People Act that root out corruption, end dark money, increase access to voting, and limit the influence of special interests.”

End Citizens United // Let America Vote is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU merged with Let America Vote, a grassroots organization that is fighting to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing pro-democracy Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 7,200 in Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
