End Citizens United // Let America Vote Endorses Chief Val Demings for U.S. Senate in Florida

Mar 22, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote today endorsed Val Demings for U.S. Senate in Florida.

Demings has a decades-long track record of fighting for the people of Florida. For 27 years, she served in the Orlando Police Department, eventually rising to become the Chief of Police, the first woman to hold that position in Orlando. As Police Chief, she was committed to justice and keeping the people of Orlando safe. During her time as Police Chief, violent crime in Orlando dropped by 40%. When she was elected to Congress, Demings kept her focus on accountability, pushing back on the corrupt, powerful special interests that run Washington. She’s fought to end dark money so billionaires can no longer buy our elections, protected Florida’s beaches from greedy corporations who want to drill offshore, and ensured that COVID relief went to small businesses in Florida–not to corporate America.

Chief Demings has also been a leader on protecting the freedom to vote. In addition to supporting the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in Congress, she’s championed the Every Vote Counts Act and Every American Has the Right to Vote Act.

“Chief Val Demings is exactly the champion that people of Florida need in the U.S. Senate. She has proven ability to fight for Floridians. Whether it’s reducing crime and keeping Florida families safe, holding corrupt politicians accountable, or protecting the freedom to vote, Chief Demings consistently puts Florida first,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “Floridians need a fighter, not politicians like Senator Rubio who always puts his wealthy donors first, giving them a multi-trillion dollar tax cut, while voting against providing needed COVID relief for Florida families, small businesses and communities. We are thrilled to endorse Val Demings and cannot wait to see her defeat Senator Rubio in November.”

“I am proud to be endorsed by End Citizens United // Let America Vote. They have done tremendous work on fighting corruption, holding wealthy special interests accountable, and ensuring that every American can make their voice heard in our elections,” said Chief Demings. “I look forward to working with ECU // LAV in the Senate to hold corrupt politicians accountable and champion voting rights for the people of Florida.”

Chief Demings’ opponent, Senator Marco Rubio, is one of DC special interests’ favorite members of the Senate, giving big corporations a $2 trillion tax handout and siding with their interests instead of Florida’s interests. Senator Rubio and other Senate Republicans are now running on a plan from Florida’s other senator, Rick Scott, that would raise taxes on over 40% of Floridians, specifically targeting seniors, single moms, and working-class families. The Rubio-Scott agenda also threatens to wipe out the existence of Medicare and Social Security within five years, bankrupting the Floridians who rely on these critical programs every day.

ECU // LAV is a leading anti-corruption and voting rights group. The grassroots-funded political action committee raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle to elect candidates fighting to limit the influence of Big Money in politics and protect the freedom to vote. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including over 388,000 in Florida.
