End Citizens United // Let America Vote Endorses Senator Tammy Duckworth for Re-Election

Sep 09, 2021

Duckworth is a strong leader in the fight to protect voting rights

End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) today endorsed Senator Tammy Duckworth in her re-election campaign for the U.S. Senate in Illinois.

Throughout her time in the House and now in the Senate, Duckworth has proven that she is a champion for the hard-working people of Illinois. She has consistently fought against dark money special interests trying to influence our elections and policy-making. Most recently, she co-sponsored the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) a critical piece of legislation that will protect the freedom to vote, fight back against the corrupting influence of dark money in our elections and eliminate partisan gerrymandering. Senator Duckworth has made it clear that she understands the stakes of passing legislation to protect the freedom to vote, a cornerstone of our democracy.

“Senator Duckworth consistently puts the people of Illinois above the corrupt special interests of D.C. Her work on the For the People Act has been crucial in the fight to ensure every Americans’ right to vote is protected,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “We’re proud to endorse Senator Duckworth in her re-election campaign and look forward to her victory next November.”

“As Republicans work to pass hundreds of voter suppression bills across the nation and make it significantly harder for BIPOC Americans, Americans with disabilities and others to vote, let me be clear: our democracy is stronger when everyone participates,” said Senator Duckworth. “Passing federal legislation that protects every American’s right to vote, gets big money out of politics and safeguards our democracy remains as important as ever, and I’m proud to receive this endorsement today.”

ECU // LAV raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle. Its $12.5 million independent expenditure made it the 4th largest issue group spending on the Democratic side. ECU // LAV’s members raised $9.5 million directly for endorsed candidates and state ballot measures. The group also donated nearly $2.5 million directly to its endorsed campaigns.

ECU // LAV merged in 2020. The group is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU // LAV led the fight to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing anti-corruption Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 127,170 in Illinois.
