End Citizens United // Let America Vote Endorses Teresa Leger Fernandez in NM-03

Apr 21, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) today endorsed Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez for re-election in New Mexico’s third congressional district. Leger Fernandez has been a strong advocate of voting rights her entire career. In Congress, she supported the most significant anti-corruption and voting rights legislation in generations, which would end dark money by making all political donations public and would limit the power of Washington lobbyists by providing more transparency into lobbyist fundraising.

“Since coming to Congress, Teresa Leger Fernandez has been an outspoken advocate of protecting the freedom to vote and rooting out corruption to strengthen our democracy. She was a leading advocate in the House to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, which included several election protections and reforms for tribal communities,” said ECU // LAV President Tiffany Muller. “We’re proud to stand with Rep. Leger Fernandez again and look forward to helping her win so she can continue the incredible work she’s started.”

“I know that democracy works best when elected officials are accountable to the people they represent, not wealthy billionaires looking to buy access and influence,” said Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez. “I’m honored to be endorsed by End Citizens United and Let America Vote and look forward to working with them to pass comprehensive voting rights and anti-corruption legislation to protect the voice and vote of New Mexico voters.”

A lifelong advocate for voting rights, Teresa Leger Fernandez has worked tirelessly to pass comprehensive legislation to protect and expand voting rights for New Mexicans, especially tribal communities. As a member of the House Elections Subcommittee, Leger Fernandez advocated for several election reforms that were ultimately included in the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, including ensuring redistricting maps minimize the division of tribal jurisdictions during redistricting; requiring states to ensure fair and equitable wait times and that voters wait less than 30 minutes to vote at the polls; and allowing Indian Tribes to designate buildings as ballot pickup and collection locations for federal elections.

ECU // LAV is a leading anti-corruption and voting rights group. The grassroots-funded political action committee raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle to elect candidates fighting to limit the influence of big money in politics and protect the freedom to vote. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including over 30,000 in New Mexico.
