End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in observance of Juneteenth:
“159 years ago today, the remaining enslaved Black Americans in Texas were freed, ending the abominable institution and practice of slavery in the United States. While today is for celebration and joy, it’s also a stark reminder of the institutional racism and persistent inequalities Black Americans still face. Black Americans’ voting rights are under attack with an intensity not seen since the Jim Crow era.
“Today we renew our calls for Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to counter anti-democracy efforts targeting Black voters across the country. We recommit ourselves, on this Juneteenth, to fighting harder than ever to ensure every American has the freedom to vote and have their voice heard in our democracy.”
