End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) President Tiffany Muller today released the following statement celebrating the beginning of Women’s History Month:
“Today marks the start of Women’s History Month, where we take the time to honor and celebrate the women who fought for the rights and freedoms we now enjoy. Their work guaranteed the advancement of opportunities for women, including the right to vote and the ability to serve in our highest offices—from representing local communities all the way to the vice presidency.
“But, in recent years, we’ve seen an uptick in coordinated attacks on these hard-earned freedoms. It’s been two years since right-wing Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade, rolling back the constitutional protection that safeguarded a woman’s right to make decisions about her body. We’ve seen the repercussions across the country as states try to rip away these reproductive rights.
“While we recognize how far we’ve come, these rollbacks remind us that there is still a long fight ahead in the path towards equality. Women still face gender-based pay discrepancies, face more barriers to the ballot box, and are underrepresented in elected office—and we recognize these inequalities are more pronounced for women of color and women with disabilities. This is unacceptable. This month, in honor of the history and contributions that have shaped our country, we recommit ourselves to fighting even harder to make sure all women, and all Americans, are truly represented and have a voice in our democracy.”
