End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act:
“We applaud House Democrats for passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. This anti-corruption and voting rights bill will make certain that every American has the freedom to make their voices heard in our elections, countering the unprecedented anti-voter laws that partisan politicians and their dark money allies have passed this past year.
“We are grateful to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Chairperson Zoe Lofgren, and Reps. G.K. Butterfield and John Sarbanes for their steadfast leadership and commitment to passing a comprehensive, commonsense bill that ensures that people’s voices will be heard and their votes protected.
“The Senate must now act. Republicans have made it clear that they have no intention of supporting any bill that ensures every American has a voice in our democracy, or that prevents efforts to sabotage our elections and overturn the will of the people. We are at a critical inflection point in our nation and it is crucial the Senate does the right thing and pass this legislation. As the late Rep. John Lewis stated, ‘democracy is not a state, it is an act’ and each generation must do it’s part to preserve it.”
