End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU/LAV) Action Fund President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement ahead of today’s Senate vote on the motion to proceed on the For the People Act:
“Today’s vote on the motion to proceed to debate the For the People Act will kick off a summer long fight to pass the bill in the Senate. While every member of the Democratic caucus is working to pass a bill that protects the freedom to vote and stop billionaires from buying elections, we expect Republicans to filibuster the bill.
“Another Republican filibuster will again prove they are not acting in good faith. We admire the noble efforts to secure Republican support, however, over the summer, when it turns out that there are not 10 Republicans willing to support any iteration of any voting rights bill, every Senator will have to decide whether protecting the right to vote is truly a priority. We believe Democrats will choose to protect the vote.
“Senate Majority Leader Schumer has said failure is not an option and has set an August deadline to pass this bill. We will continue our campaign through paid communications, grassroots mobilization, and grass tops activation to ensure that the bill is passed by that deadline.”
