End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on 13th Anniversary of Citizens United

Jan 21, 2023

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the 13th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. F.E.C.:

“Thirteen years ago today, the Supreme Court handed down one of the worst decisions in modern history in Citizens United v. F.E.C. It took two bad ideas and combined them–that money equals speech and that corporations are people.

“Since the 2010 decision, we’ve seen an onslaught of Big Money in our elections, with corporations and mega-donors spending billions of dollars to buy elections, influence, and policy outcomes in Washington.

“This past election, we saw some of the worst effects of the Citizens United decision. Dark money kept extremist candidates artificially competitive and allowed candidates to run shell campaigns with billionaires bailing them out. We even saw dark money groups fund the attacks on our democracy, including the January 6 insurrection, the hundreds of anti-voter laws introduced nationwide, and partisan gerrymandering.

“On this anniversary, we will rededicate ourselves to doing everything we can to overturn Citizens United, elect champions of democracy, increase transparency, empower small donors, and fight back against corruption.”
