End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on Bipartisan Gun Legislation

Jun 24, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the Senate moving forward with the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to address gun violence. The legislation will enhance background checks for gun purchasers younger than 21, direct funding to help states implement red flag laws, and for the first time include serious dating partners in the federal law that bars domestic abusers from purchasing firearms.

“The compromise bipartisan gun legislation is a positive step forward in addressing gun violence and will save lives. This is the first time in decades that Congress has been able to take meaningful and significant action to combat rampant gun violence in the country. The bill comes as special interest groups like the NRA have weakened and reductions in their spending and influence has allowed Congress to finally move forward and listen to the American people, not gun manufacturers.

“This is one step, however, and we must continue to limit the spending of special interest groups designed to drown out the voices of regular people to push their agenda. The fact that a majority of Republicans continue to block common sense gun safety measures while taking millions from the gun lobby cannot continue when the lives of our children and millions of American families are at stake.”
