End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) Chief Program Officer Jody Murphy released the following statement on Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of SB 747, North Carolina Republicans’ restrictive anti-voter bill:
“We applaud Governor Roy Cooper for vetoing SB 747. North Carolina Republicans know they can’t win elections based solely on merit and ideas. Instead, they’re rigging the system by changing the rules. They enlisted the help of Cleta Mitchell, one of the biggest election deniers in the country, who crafted the GOP blueprint for suppressing the freedom to vote on college campuses.
“Make no mistake, SB 747 is directly in response to the fact that more people of color and young voters are making their voices heard.
“Unless Congress passes national standards, like the Freedom to Vote Act, to protect every Americans’ ability to participate in the democratic process, these attacks will only intensify. We must ensure every voter is guaranteed the full protections that the Constitution promises.”
