End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the House passage of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s (D-DC) bill for D.C. statehood:
“For far too long, over 712,000 residents of Washington D.C. have been denied representation in Congress and the right to self government even while they pay federal income taxes, serve in the military, and follow laws––just like every American who lives in a state. The treatment of Washingtonians––the majority of whom are Black and brown––as second class citizens is morally reprehensible and runs counter to the core American values of democracy for all and equality under the law.
“The fight for D.C. statehood is a fight for racial justice, a fight for equal citizenship, and a fight to make America a more perfect Union. We applaud Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer and the Democratic House majority for passing this crucial legislation, and we urge the Senate to swiftly make this bill law and give 712,000 Americans their full rights of citizenship.”
