End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement on Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s announcement that she is not running for reelection:
“In 2021, Senator Kyrsten Sinema made one of the worst political calculations in recent history. Amidst MAGA Republican election lies and Trump’s insurrection, we had a chance to protect our democracy by passing historic pro-democracy and voting rights legislation. End Citizens United // Let America Vote helped lead a diverse coalition of groups representing millions of Americans to warn Senator Sinema that we would withdraw all support if she didn’t take all necessary measures to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
“Instead of voting to reform the filibuster rules to allow these bills to advance, she sided with an antiquated Senate procedure over the American people. That vote sealed her fate as a Senator and ultimately led to today’s announcement.
“As Senator Sinema lives with the harsh reality of her decision, it’s become clear that the support she underestimated was, in fact, essential for her political survival. History will remember Senator Sinema as standing on the side of restrictive voting laws and politicians who want to overturn the will of the voters.
“We look forward to helping elect Congressman Ruben Gallego to the Senate so Arizonans can be represented by someone who will always put our democracy first.”
