End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on the 8th Anniversary of Shelby County v. Holder

Jun 25, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU//LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder:

“On June 25, 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in Shelby County v. Holder, one of the court’s most odious decisions in history. Eight years later, we are seeing the harms of that decision play out across the country. From laws that restrict early voting sites to those implementing flawed and improper tactics to purge eligible voters from the voter rolls, Republicans are taking full advantage of the freedom to discriminate that Shelby gave them. This year alone, nearly 400 bills have been introduced in 48 states to restrict Americans’ constitutional right to vote.

“To remedy the court’s decision, we must pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to restore the full protections the Constitution guarantees every voter. Senate process or procedure should not stand in the way. Inaction in the Senate will only further deteriorate our democracy. Enacting both bills would protect Americans from the barrage of anti-voting bills that Shelby allowed for and would ensure the fundamental American right to vote is once again protected by law.”
