End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on the Anniversary of the Passing of Congressman John Lewis

Jul 17, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the passing of civil rights hero Congressman John Lewis:

“One year ago today, our nation lost Congressman John Lewis, a true American hero. From his historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge as part of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Marches, to co-authoring the Voter Empowerment Act, a key part of the For the People Act, Congressman Lewis never gave up his fight for every American’s fundamental right to vote. He was a shining example of the best that America has to offer and inspired so many to carry on his fight and make good trouble.

“On this anniversary of his passing, the right to vote is once again being attacked. Nationwide, Republicans are using the Big Lie to push for restrictive voter measures, with nearly 400 pieces of legislation being proposed in 48 states. That is why tonight people across the country are gathering for vigils to remember the extraordinary life Congressman Lewis led and to demand that Congress immediately take action on voting rights by passing the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to counteract this nationwide assault on the freedom to vote.

“The loss of Congressman Lewis last year was a heartbreaking blow to the country and to the fight for voting rights. Congress must honor his legacy by continuing his push to protect voting rights and pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
