End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement commemorating the 153rd anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment
“On this day in 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified into law, forever enshrining into the U.S. Constitution that all Americans are entitled to due process and equal protection under the law.
“This amendment has been used to ensure the rights of all people in America throughout our nation’s history. From ending segregation in schools to expanding access to the ballot box to ensuring everyone could marry whomever they love, the Fourteenth Amendment has been a force for good in the lives of the American people.
“Today, America faces a challenge where Republican-led state governments are trying to restrict the right to vote from their citizens, particularly their Black and brown citizens. The anniversary of the Fourteenth Amendment’s ratification serves as a reminder of the need for Congress to do all it can to protect the rights of the American people. On this year’s anniversary, that means passing the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to once again protect the rights of the American people to vote in their elections.”
