End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on the House Committee on Administration Hearing on Election Subversion

Jul 28, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement regarding the House Administration Committee’s hearing on the rising threat of election subversion and how these threats underscore the need for the For the People Act:

“Today, Chairperson Zoe Lofgren held a hearing on the growing threat to our democracy: state laws predicated on the Big Lie that allow for election subversion and the silencing of the voice of the American people.

“The message today’s witnesses sent to Congress is clear: There must be immediate congressional action on protecting democracy. As Adrian Fontes, a former County Recorder in Maricopa County, Arizona testified today, both the voters of our country and the hard-working, patriotic Americans who dedicate their time and effort to ensure our elections run smoothly need Congress to pass voting rights legislation to protect our democracy.

“We applaud Chairperson Zoe Lofgren, Democratic members of the committee, and the witnesses who testified in front of the committee, including the author of the For the People Act Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03), Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), Gowri Ramachandran, the Senior Counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice, Adrian Fontes, a former County Recorder in Maricopa County, Arizona, and Janice Winfrey, the City Clerk of Detroit, Michigan.

“At today’s hearing, Congresswoman Nikema Williams stated that, ‘You’re either on the side of democracy or you aren’t.’ The Senate must prove they will protect democracy and immediately pass the For the People Act, even if it means updating Senate procedure.”
