End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on the Passing of Civil Rights Activist Bob Moses

Jul 26, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after the passing of the heroic civil rights activist Bob Moses:

“Yesterday our nation lost one of its true heroes, Bob Moses, who spent his life fighting systemic inequality and advocating for civil rights and the right to vote. From founding the Algebra Project to help educate low-income communities and students of color, to co-founding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, to his work registering Black voters in Mississippi in the face of attacks from the Klu Klux Klan and other white supremacists, Moses courageously persevered through violence and injustice to ensure that every American could participate in our democracy–regardless of the color of their skin.

“Mr. Moses was a shining example of a true American hero committed to defending the foundations of our democracy. As a grassroots organizer, he embodied and upheld our country’s values, opting to make change by educating and mobilizing people rather than working through political elites. His bold leadership, alongside other civil rights activists, paved the way for the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and other civil rights legislation.

“The loss of Bob Moses serves as a reminder that our battle in the protection of voting rights is far from over. With voting rights again under attack today, our political leaders must honor his legacy by protecting the right to vote and passing the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
