End Citizens United // Let America Vote Urge Senate to Confirm Vanita Gupta As Associate Attorney General

Mar 09, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund today sent a letter to Chairman Dick Durbin and Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of Vanita Gupta’s confirmation as Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice. Gupta, who is a civil rights champion, would be the first woman of color to serve as Associate Attorney General in our country’s history and the first civil rights lawyer to serve in the top three positions at the DOJ. President Biden has also called Vanita Gupta “one of the most respected civil rights lawyers in America.”

Excerpts of the letter read:
Ms. Gupta is a champion for civil rights and has dedicated her career to racial justice and ensuring everyone–no matter who they are or where they come from–can be heard in our democracy.

As a young civil rights attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Ms. Gupta successfully led the effort to overturn the wrongful drug convictions of 38 people in Texas. During her time at the ACLU, she oversaw the organization’s criminal justice work and directed a campaign aimed at ending mass incarceration. Later, as head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, she led the agency’s efforts to reform the criminal justice system, investigate policing practices, and aggressively enforce federal voting rights laws.

[…]

Ms. Gupta is a dedicated public servant. Her experience as a civil rights attorney, inspired leader, and champion for our democracy will bring a vital voice to the work of the Biden-Harris Department of Justice. We urge the Senate to confirm her as soon as possible.
