End Citizens United Names Kelly Loeffler to “Big Money 20”

Jan 06, 2020

Loeffler, who bought her Senate appointment, will become one of the most corrupt members of Congress the moment she’s sworn in

The Big Money 20 campaign will focus on defeating incumbents who represent a rigged Washington establishment that puts corporate special interests ahead of voters’ needs

End Citizens United (ECU) today named unelected Kelly Loeffler (GA-SEN) to the Big Money 20, the group’s top incumbents to defeat in 2020. ECU’s Big Money 20 campaign is focused on defeating incumbents who benefit most from the corrupt establishment in Washington by showing voters how mega-donors, like Kelly Loeffler, buy their way into political office.

“Kelly Loeffler buying this seat embodies why Washington isn’t working for Georgians. From the moment she’s sworn in, Loeffler will become one of the most corrupt members of Congress,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “All Loeffler had to do was pledge $20 million to fund her campaign for Governor Kemp to come knocking at her door. Senators should be elected based on voters’ choice, not who can write the biggest check. End Citizens United will fight to make sure Georgians are represented by a Senator elected by the people.”

End Citizens United aims to educate voters about the Big Money 20 and rally support for reforming the political system. The members of the Big Money 20 are incumbents who take money from corporate special interests, mega-donors, and industries like Big Pharma and Wall Street and then put those interests ahead of their constituents.

Loeffler’s promise to spend $20 million to defend her seat was a major reason for Governor Brian Kemp’s appointment. Loeffler and her husband Jeffrey Sprecher, the  chair of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), have donated $3.2 million to political committees –– 97 percent of which went to Republican candidates and causes. Loeffler and her husband also have a history of contributing to Republicans involved in ethics, campaign finance, and other scandals, including to the campaigns of Big Money 20 members Sens. McSally, McConnell, Collins, Tillis, and Cornyn. Loeffler buying her way to the U.S. Senate instead of being elected by voters is Washignton’s corrupt establishment at its worst.

In the 2018 cycle, End Citizens United helped defeat or retire 82% of the Big Money 20 targets. ECU will connect its more than 550,000 donors to endorsed candidates who are challenging Big Money 20 targets.

ECU has conducted extensive polling and research showing that voters across the political spectrum support getting big money out of politics. ECU is a traditional political action committee (PAC) with more than four million members, including 75,000 in Georgia. The reform group raised and spent $44 million last cycle, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
