End Citizens United//Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement praising Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) and House Democrats for today’s House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on protecting the right to vote during the COVID-19 pandemic:
“We applaud Chairman Steve Cohen and his Democatic colleagues for holding this important hearing to ensure Americans don’t have to choose between their health and their vote. It’s clear that the threat of COVID-19 isn’t going away and we need to make sure Congress, states, and localities are doing what’s necessary to ensure every eligible voter can cast their vote safely on Election Day.”
House Democrats invited some of the foremost voting rights experts and elected officials in the country to speak at today’s hearing, while Republicans invited leaders of two dark money groups whose claims of voter fraud have been continually debunked. One was even forced by a court to apologize for his research that improperly accused Americans of voting illegally.
Already this year, House Democrats have voted for $4 billion in election preparedness funding––$400 million in the CARES Act that was signed into law this spring and $3.6 billion in the Heroes Act that’s currently sitting in Sen. Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard. House Democrats have also passed the sweeping anti-corruption bill the For the People Act (H.R. 1), the Voting RIghts Advancement Act (H.R. 4) to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, the SHIELD Act (H.R. 2722) to protect our elections from foreign interference, and the SAFE Act to safeguard our voting systems––all of which are also being blocked by McConnell.
