End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement in response to President Trump removing FEC Commissioner Ellen Weintraub from the Federal Election Commission:
“This is a corrupt power grab by a man who has always seen campaign finance laws as a hindrance to his ambitions. Trump unlawfully fired Commissioner Weintraub because he knows he can’t buy her loyalty, and he wants an FEC that looks the other way while he, his party, and their billionaire donors break the law to keep themselves in power.
“It’s no coincidence that he went after the commission’s toughest, most principled voice. Commissioner Weintraub has spent her career upholding the law, exposing corruption, and holding bad actors accountable. She has been a relentless champion of fair elections, ensuring the FEC stood as an independent watchdog committed to enforcing campaign finance laws––at a time when they have been systemically gutted in the aftermath of Citizens United.
“The integrity of our elections is on the line. Congress must step up and assert its authority before this overtly corrupt, power-hungry president dismantles the last remaining safeguards in our campaign finance system. This is a moment of reckoning––either we stand up for the rule of law, or we let Trump destroy it.”
