End Citizens United Statement on 10th Anniversary of Citizens United

Jan 21, 2020

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the tenth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision:

“In the decade since the Supreme Court put a for sale sign on our elections, our democracy has been rigged in favor of the wealthy and corporate special interests. It’s drowning out the voices of everyday Americans and shutting them out of the political process.

“It’s fitting that the impeachment trial in the Senate begins on the Citizens United anniversary. Our campaign finance laws, as we’ve seen through the impeachment process, are inadequate and open the door for corrupt politicians to advance their own interests at the expense of the rest of us. It’s at the core of why Washington is mired in gridlock and failure.

“While corrupt forces are working to uphold Washington’s broken system, Americans’ determination and enthusiasm to fix the system is sweeping the country. Democrats are heeding the call for reform at all levels of government, and they’re delivering.

“On this ten year anniversary, we rededicate ourselves to taking back our democracy from the grips of big money special interests and restoring power back to where it rightfully belongs: with the American people. Our democracy depends on it.”

Ahead of the ten year anniversary, End Citizens United co-sponsored the “We The People 2020: Protecting Our Democracy a Decade After Citizens United” forum. The forum featured top Democratic presidential candidates who discussed their plans to end the dominance of big money in politics, protect the right to vote, ensure fair courts, and create a democracy that works for all of us. End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller also penned an op-ed in USA Today outlining the extent to which the 2010 Supreme Court decision has corrupted American politics.
