End Citizens United Statement on Anniversary of H.R. 1 Introduction

Jan 03, 2020

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the For the People Act’s (H.R. 1) introduction in the U.S. House:

“It’s been a year since the U.S. House introduced the For the People Act, the most sweeping anti-corruption and government ethics bill since Watergate. The For the People Act passed the House in March, but Mitch McConnell refuses to even bring the legislation up for a hearing because it would upend the rigged system that he and his corporate special interest donors have created. The House has done its job, and it’s past time for the Senate to do theirs. McConnell must listen to the American people and allow the Senate to vote on the For the People Act.”

The For the People Act was borne out of the 2018 midterm elections that saw Democrats win the majority in the House of Representatives on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. The comprehensive bill, which passed the House in March, aims to restore voting rights, safeguard the integrity of elections, reform ethics laws, and end the dominance of big money in politics. A post-election poll commissioned by ECU found that 75 percent of 2018 voters in battleground House districts said cracking down on Washington corruption was their top priority.
