End Citizens United Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Jan 20, 2025

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, honoring the civil rights legend, which coincides with the inauguration of President Donald Trump:

“Today, as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight for justice, equality, and voting rights, we are reminded of his vision of a democracy rooted in fairness, inclusivity, and equal opportunity for all. Sadly, this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day coincides with the inauguration of a president whose values and agenda contradicts that vision.

“Donald Trump and his administration represent an oligarchy––where the wealthy and powerful who control business and industry also control the levers of government. His actions and rhetoric deepen divisions, undermine civil rights, and prioritize billionaires over the struggles of working families. Black Americans, who continue to face systemic inequalities and barriers to justice, will be among those most impacted by his agenda.

“This is not the dream Dr. King fought for. This is not the America he worked to build. On this day of reflection, we must reject the direction our country is heading in and recommit ourselves to advancing Dr. King’s aspirations for a democracy that serves the many, not the few. With his vision as our guide, we will continue to fight back and ensure that every voice is heard and no one is left behind.”
