Final Debate Proves Cal Cunningham Will Fight for North Carolina, Thom Tillis too Weak to Stand Up to Corporate Donors

Oct 01, 2020

Thom Tillis has taken $3 million from corporate PACs; Cal Cunningham rejects corporate PAC money

Cal Cunningham in tonight’s debate: “We’ve heard Senator Tillis fail to account for why it is that in Washington he’s caved in to the interests around him, the Washington interests, the special interests, the corporate interests.  Taking three million dollars in corporate PAC money and voting to give big tax cuts to the corporations, not fighting for our families.  Why is it that he’s taken over four hundred thousand dollars from big pharma, and even opposed bipartisan plans to bring down the cost of prescription drugs.”

Cal Cunningham, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, took on Senator Thom Tillis for the third and final time in a debate ahead of the general election this November.  The contrast between the two candidates could not be more clear: while Cunningham is rejecting corporate PAC money to fight for the Tar Heel state’s interests, Tillis has benefitted Big Money’s bottom line in Congress.

“Tonight, Cal Cunningham’s reform-focused message stood in stark contrast to Thom Tillis’ record of corruption,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Cunningham made democratic reform a top priority in his campaign while Tillis has enabled Big Money’s stranglehold over Congress. Cal Cunningham will fight for North Carolina families; Thom Tillis is hurting them.”

Throughout his career, Tillis has hurt the people of North Carolina by siding with corporate PACs. While North Carolina families struggle to cover the high costs of prescription drugs, Senator Tillis received $276,000 from Big Pharma. As North Carolinians are threatened with bankruptcy after going to the doctor, Senator Tillis has taken $41,000 from health insurance PACs. While North Carolina families are forced to cover the costs leftover from big corporations receiving millions in tax breaks, Senator Tillis supported the disastrous 2017 GOP tax bill that benefited his Big Money donors and has received $126,000 from Wall Street. Senator Thom Tillis has created more problems for North Carolina families than he has solved.

Cal Cunningham will stand up to the corruption in Washington that Tillis defends. He’s rejecting corporate PAC money and is running a people-powered campaign. Cunningham also put forth a comprehensive reform agenda to combat the influence of money in politics, which would make government more transparent and accountable to North Carolinians by getting Big Money out of politics, ending partisan gerrymandering, securing elections and guaranteeing access to the ballot.
