Following Markup: End Citizens United // Let America Vote Call for Senate Passage of For the People Act

May 11, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration’s markup of the For the People Act (S. 1):

“Following a successful markup, it’s time for the full Senate to pass the For the People Act. Corporate special interests and big donors have too much power and influence in Washington and dark money groups are coordinating with state legislatures to put up barriers to voting around the country.

“This critical bill will end dark money and empower small donors so that billionaires can’t buy our elections, put in place ironclad ethics laws to crack down on corruption and the influence of lobbyists, modernize our election to protect from hacking and foreign influence, and protect the freedom to vote equally across the country. These reforms will ensure politicians are accountable and our government is responsive to the people, not wealthy donors and corporate special interests. That’s why this bill has broad, bipartisan support from Americans in every corner of the county. Eighty-three percent of Americans including three in four Republican voters support this bill.

“We thank Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar and Senator Jeff Merkley for their leadership and for their work moving the For the People Act through the Senate. Leader Schumer has announced that the bill will come to the Senate floor for a vote, and we urge swift passage to make sure all Americans have an equal say in our democracy.”

Over the last several years, ECU // LAV has advocated for the passage of the For the People Act through a nationwide grassroots campaign, paid communications, and partnerships with allied groups, candidates, and members of Congress. H.R. 1 has now been co-sponsored by every House Democrat two congressional sessions in a row and passed the House in March. The bill is a top priority for Senate Democrats as well as President Biden, who has called for Congress to send it to his desk “right away”.
