Google’s Response to Insurrection? A Slap on the Wrist.

Jan 29, 2021

In response to the attempted siege on the United States Capitol, Google, like most of corporate America, is scrambling to avoid negative PR while refusing to take meaningful action to hold members of Congress accountable. Why? Their corporate PACs are vehicles for direct access and influence over members of Congress.

Here’s what Google said to Axios earlier this week:
“After the disturbing events at the Capitol, NetPAC paused all contributions while undertaking a review. Following that review, the NetPAC board has decided that it will not be making any contributions this cycle to any member of Congress who voted against certification of the election results,” said José Castañeda, a Google spokesperson.

“Apparently, the insurrection wasn’t ‘disturbing’ enough for Google’s executives. Pausing contributions for one election cycle is a slap on the wrist – and a weak one at that. It’s laughable to think that Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, or any of the other seditionists are going to have an epiphany and stop their crusade against our democracy. If Google’s executives truly care, they should demand a refund of their contributions from the seditionists and vow to never support them again,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller.
