Graham and McMaster Want to Protect Corporate Special Interests Instead of American Democracy

Apr 06, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller issued the below statement on the For the People Act (H.R. 1, S. 1) following Senator Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) and Governor Henry McMaster’s press conference today against the reform bill:

“Washington has never been more broken and Americans across party lines are fed up with self-serving politicians who put big money special interests ahead of everyone else. The For the People Act would reduce the influence of money in politics so that billionaires can’t buy elections, crack down on political corruption in both parties, ensure accurate elections, and protect the right to vote. It’s the only way to move our country forward.

“The American people across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support the For the People Act because these reforms would reform our democracy so it can make a direct impact on issues important to South Carolina families’ lives, like providing affordable healthcare and lowering the cost of prescription drugs, no matter who they voted for. Instead of protecting the corrupt status quo and corporate special interests, Senator Graham and Gov. McMaster should side with American Democracy. It’s time for the Senate to make this critical bill law.”

recent poll commissioned by ECU // LAV Action Fund and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) and conducted by Global Strategy Group and ALG Research, shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans across party lines support the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1). Democrats won control of the House and Senate by running on issues that the For the People Act would address, including ending dark money, stopping gerrymandering, and protecting voting rights.
