After passing 34 anti-voter laws in 19 different states in 2021, the GOP and their dark money allies are back at it again in 2022, introducing bills in states across the country that will restrict access to the ballot box. Already this year, there have been 111 restrictive voting bills introduced across the country and another 152 from 2021 that will roll over into 2022. Some of the most egregious of these bills that will deny Americans the freedom to vote include:
-
Georgia, which plans to revisit legislation to further restrict access to absentee voting and ban ballot drop boxes, making it harder for Georgia voters, especially Black voters, to make their voices heard.
-
Arizona, where at least 23 anti-voter bills have already been introduced, including legislation that would create a government agency meant to sabotage our elections by undermining faith in our democracy.
-
Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis is trying to improperly purge voters from the voter rolls and intimidate voters with threats of criminal penalties.
-
Virginia, where Governor Glenn Youngkin and his allies in the general assembly have proposed at least 35 pieces of legislation to roll back Virginia’s progress on voting rights and make it harder for Virginians to access the ballot box.
GOP politicians will not stop their relentless attack on the freedom to vote. The U.S. Senate must act to counter these anti-voters efforts by passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Any senator who fails to act to stop these restrictive voting laws by doing whatever it takes to pass this bill will be siding with these un-American efforts to restrict access to the ballot and will contribute to the irreversible collapse of the fundamental foundations of our democracy.
