House GOP Ethics Rules Changes Will Allow for More Corruption

Jan 04, 2023

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in response to Republicans’ proposed changes to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE):

“The Office of Congressional Ethics is a non-partisan entity designed to hold members of Congress and their staff accountable when they break the rules. It has long served a critical role in ensuring bad actors on Capitol Hill are held accountable.

“We are just two days into the Republicans’ House majority and they are already trying to make it easier for self-serving politicians to avoid accountability. By proposing to force Democrats off the Board of the Office of Congressional Ethics and make it nearly impossible to hire and retain staff to conduct investigations, Republicans are trying to allow politicians to get away with lies, deceit, and corruption.

“Republicans want to let their colleagues like George Santos get away with lying and ethical violations. It is imperative that House Republicans maintain the full strength of the Office of Congressional Ethics – so that we are able to crack down on corruption and not let members of Congress get away with breaking the law.

“If Republicans move forward with these proposed rule changes to the Office of Congressional Ethics, they need to explain to the American people why they want to allow for more corruption in Washington.”
