IA Debate: Theresa Greenfield Draws Stark Contrast to Joni Ernst’s Record of Corruption

Sep 29, 2020

Joni Ernst has accepted over $2 million from corporate PACs; Theresa Greenfield rejects corporate PAC money

Theresa Greenfield, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Iowa, took on Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa’s first Senate Debate tonight. Greenfield is running a reform-focused campaign by rejecting corporate PAC money and putting forth her own plan to End Political Corruption before even getting to office.

Joni Ernst has taken $2 million from corporate PACs, most notably from Big Pharma and the health insurance industry. In office, Ernst has backed policies that benefit these special interests, siding with her donors to increase the cost of prescription drugs and threatening Social Security that Iowa families have worked hard for. Her support of the 2017 GOP tax bill gave billions to huge corporations at great cost to Iowa families. Joni Ernst was also caught illegally working  with a falsely registered nonprofit and failed to disclose the names of staffers employed by her re-election campaign, a clear violation of FEC rules.

Meanwhile, Theresa Greenfield rejects corporate PAC money and is running a people-powered movement with support from all 99 of Iowa’s counties. As Senator, she will support legislation to root out corruption in Washington and make sure the government is working for the people of Iowa, not corporate special interests.

“Instead of going to Washington to ‘make ‘em squeal,’ Ernst has repeatedly put the interests of her donors first, leaving Iowa families to pick up the pieces. Theresa Greenfield is running to stand up to the corrupt status quo that Ernst embodies,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Theresa doesn’t take a dime from corporate PACs because she’s seen the damage Joni Ernst has caused hardworking Iowa families across the state by prioritizing the needs of special interests over those she’s supposed to represent.”
