In First Round of House Endorsements, End Citizens United // Let America Vote Endorse Rep. Colin Allred for Reelection

Jun 02, 2021

Allred has led efforts to protect voting rights and pass anti-corruption reforms and does not accept corporate PAC money

End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) today endorsed Representative Colin Allred in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District for reelection, as part of the group’s first round of House of Representatives endorsements for the 2022 election cycle.

Rep. Allred was first elected to the House in 2018 as part of the historic class that flipped the chamber by promising to stand up for working families––not special interests and big corporations––and working to protect and expand voting rights. Since arriving in Washington, he has followed through on his promise to return power to Texans by not accepting corporate PAC money and twice cosponsoring and passing the for the For the People Act (H.R. 1)––a once-in-a-generation anti-corruption bill that would stop billionaires and corporate special interests from buying our elections, shine a light on dark money, end partisan gerrymandering, protect the freedom to vote, and institute iron-clad ethics laws. The bill included two of Congressman Allred’s provisions, the Shell Company Abuse Act, which would make it a felony to use or create an American shell company to conceal illegal political spending by foreign nationals and the Know Your Polling Place Act, which would require states to notify voters of changes in their polling places before a federal election.

“Representative Allred is one of the most outspoken and powerful voices in the fight to return our democracy back to the people. Whether it’s his refusal to take corporate PAC money or his efforts to pass the For the People Act, Representative Allred has proven time and again that elected officials can serve with honor and integrity,” said ECU/LAV President Tiffany Muller. “His advocacy and leadership on rooting out corruption and protecting voting rights is critical at a time where dark money special interests are erecting unprecedented barriers to voting in Texas and across the country. We’re proud to endorse his reelection campaign, and we look forward to helping him win.”

“As a former voting rights attorney and someone who was the target of false attacks ads funded by foreign nationals, I know how important it is that we act to shore up our democracy and protect the freedom to vote,” said Allred. “With the widespread attack on voting rights we’ve seen since the November elections, passing the For the People Act into law has never been more urgent and ECU // LAV has been leading the charge to do just that. I am honored to have their endorsement and to continue working with them to expand voting rights, end corruption and make our democracy work better for all Americans.”

ECU // LAV raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle and raised and contributed nearly $105,000 in support of Allred’s reelection. Its $12.5 million independent expenditure made it the 4th largest issue group spending on the Democratic side. ECU // LAV’s members raised $9.5 million directly for endorsed candidates and state ballot measures. The group also donated over $2.5 million directly to its endorsed campaigns.

ECU // LAV merged in 2020. The group is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU // LAV led the fight to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing anti-corruption Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 17,200 in TX-32.
