Latest Congressional Hearings on Voting Rights Underscores Urgent Need for the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Apr 20, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the Senate Judiciary Committee and House Judiciary Committee hearings this week on voting rights:

“There is an all-out assault on the right to vote. As dark money groups continue to spread falsehoods about the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, while voter suppression bills work their way through state legislatures across the country, it’s important the American people and our representatives in Congress are reminded of the gravity of the threats we face and the merits of this federal legislation.

“The truth is simple: the For the People Act will finally stop billionaires and corporations from buying our elections, ensuring that everyday Americans, not corporate special interests, are choosing our elected officials. As state legislators across the country work to pass voter suppression bills, the legislation would also protect all Americans’ freedom to vote, crack down on political corruption and provide funding for accurate and safe elections.

“We are grateful to the Senate Judiciary Committee Chair, Senator Dick Durbin, and House Judiciary Committee Chair, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, for recognizing the urgency of the moment and bringing this critical issue before their committees. We also recognize and thank Senator Raphael Warnock, former Georgia Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, Sherrilyn Ifill, and Dr. Carol Anderson for providing the Senate Judiciary Committee today with factual, accurate information about this bill. Their testimony reaffirms the fact that the U.S. Senate must pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now.”
