Let America Vote and End Citizens United Action Funds President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the updated version of the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act (HEROES Act), a $2.2 trillion stimulus bill introduced in the House today to address negotiations between Republicans and Democrats that includes providing $3.6 billion in election preparedness funding for States to use for contingency planning, preparation and the resilience of elections; and over $15 billion for the U.S. Postal Service:
“Americans should never have to choose between their health and their right to vote. We are grateful that House Democrats, led by Speaker Pelosi, came together to propose an updated version of the HEROES Act, a coronavirus relief package that includes $3.6 billion in vitally needed funding for election safety and preparedness, and $15 billion for the U.S. Post Office and an additional $15 million for the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General. Safe, free and fair elections and a functioning postal system are essential to a functioning democracy. With less than five weeks until Election Day, states need this funding to protect voters’ health and provide options to access the ballot without risk to them or their families. We urge Republicans to finally come to the table to pass this critical piece of legislation on behalf of the American people and the integrity of our democracy.”
