On National Voter Registration Day, Let America Vote (LAV) and End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller and Yes on Prop 17 Campaign Manager Shay Franco-Clausen released the following statement on Proposition 17, which would ensure that Californians who have completed their prison term can fully participate in our democracy:
“Nearly 50,000 Californians who have completed their prison sentence are being denied the right to vote, but they still contribute to society in every other way,” said LAV and ECU President Tiffany Muller. “Prop 17 will restore voting rights to individuals who have completed their prison term. Its passage is essential to ensuring that everyone has a say in shaping our democracy. These Californians should be welcomed back as contributing members of their communities, not stripped of their sacred right to vote. We’re proud to support Yes on 17’s efforts to build a truly representative democracy.”
“A democracy that is fair and equitable must include all members of the community. Prop 17 not only restores voting rights, but it creates a strong Democracy when it includes us all,” said Shay Franco-Clausen, campaign manager of Yes on Prop 17.
Fight for Reform, the state level affiliate of LAV and ECU, focuses on defending the right to vote and defeating the influence of big money in states and localities around the country. FFR will connect supporters and volunteers with efforts to pass Proposition 17.
