McConnell Scrambles Dark Money Machine as Momentum Grows for Voting Rights

Jan 05, 2022

As Senate closes in on bills to protect the freedom to vote and the will of the voters and to crack down on corruption, Mitch McConnell’s corporate dark money arm starts desperate ad campaign to convince senators that obstruction in the name of restricting voting, sabotaging elections, and overturning free elections is the way to go.

While Majority Leader Schumer has been uniting his caucus and preparing to pass a pair of historic anti-corruption and voting rights bills, Mitch McConnell is scrambling to launch a new dark money campaign in a desperate attempt to stop the momentum of the pro-democracy legislation.

OneNation, McConnell’s corporate dark money organization is launching a $1 million ad campaign in West Virginia and Washington, DC defending Washington’s broken system that will create more gridlock and obstruction.

“On the week of the anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Mitch McConnell is attempting to double down on team insurrection by defending the status quo of dysfunction and obstruction,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “Democrats have worked all year to pass bills that protect the vote and voice of the people. Standing in the way has been Mitch McConnell and his quest to hold onto power, regardless of the damage he’s doing to our democracy. Fortunately, both House and Senate Democrats unanimously believe in protecting the freedom of all Americans to vote and participate in the system and have their votes counted, no matter where they live, or to which party they belong.”

Earlier this week, Schumer announced the Senate would vote on the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act as well as changes to Senate procedure that will ensure the bills receive a full and fair debate and up or down vote. In the tradition of the anti-civil rights senators like Strom Thurmond, McConnell has abused outdated Senate procedures to block these bills and every iteration of them since the House passed their versions early in 2021.

Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act represent the most significant anti-corruption and voting rights bills in generations. They would protect the freedom to vote for every American, no matter where they live; end dark money so that billionaires can’t buy elections; end partisan gerrymandering so that voters pick their representatives instead of representatives picking their voters; and defend the will of the voters against efforts to sabotage or overturn our election, including protecting voters from intimidation and trusted local election officials from harassment so they can count every vote.
