Michigan’s Anti-Voter Initiative is a Cynical, Anti-Democratic Attempt to Restrict the Freedom to Vote

Sep 28, 2021

Michigan Republicans are attempting to pass their anti-voter proposals in an exploitative and un-democratic process. After Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved measures to increase access to the ballot box in 2018, Republicans in the Michigan legislature introduced restrictive voting bills that would undo the will of Michigan voters and restrict the freedom to vote, particularly in Black and Latino communities. Their proposals would limit accessible methods of voting like absentee and mail-in voting, place restrictions on ballot drop-boxes, and empower partisan poll watchers to intimidate voters.

Now that their restrictive voter bills failed to pass into law, Michigan Republicans are taking a cynical procedural approach to impose their anti-voter proposals on the people of Michigan. They are attempting to exploit the state’s ballot initiative system to get 340,000 signatures–less than 5% of Michigan voters–to pass their restrictive voter laws without approval from Governor Whitmer.

“Michigan Republicans are engaging in a cynical abuse of the system to restrict access to the ballot box,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “These anti-voter laws are an attack on the freedom to vote and undermine faith in our elections. Michigan Republicans must immediately stop their dangerous assault on voting rights and uphold the will of the overwhelming majority of Michigan voters.”
