MO-02 Fact Check: Wagner Touts False Voting Record Because the Truth Hurts Her Re-Election Chances

Oct 19, 2020

Jill Schupp rejects corporate PAC money

Wagner has accepted over $3.8 million from corporate PACs over the course of her political career

Jill Schupp, Democratic candidate for Congress in Missouri’s Second Congressional District, and Congresswoman Ann Wagner addressed some of the top issues facing Missouri voters in a forum today ahead of the general election.

“Ann Wagner has accepted over $3.8 million from corporate PACs, and her votes in Congress have shown where her loyalties lie,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Wagner has stood in the way of progress on issues Missouri families care most about. She’s taken almost $400,000 from Big Pharma and health insurance PACs, and voted against a bill that would significantly lower the cost of prescriptions. Unlike her opponent, Jill Schupp rejects corporate PAC money and won’t be accountable to anyone but Missouri families. Missourians deserve better than Ann Wagner in Congress.”

Wagner used the candidate forum to spew false information about her record in Washington. Voters deserve to know the truth:

  • Congresswoman Wagner has accepted nearly $400,000 from Big Pharma and health insurance PACs, and voted against the Lower Drug Costs Now Act (H.R. 3) and to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

    • H.R. 3 would significantly lower the cost of prescription drugs for Missouri families by giving Medicare new powers to negotiate annual prices for up to 250 of the most expensive drugs on the market, and make the lower drug prices negotiated by Medicare available to Americans with private insurance, not just Medicare beneficiaries.

  • Wagner has repeatedly voted to gut the Affordable Care Act, which would kick millions of Americans off their insurance in the middle of a deadly pandemic.

    • Gutting the Affordable Care Act also threatens Missourians with pre-existing conditions who could be kicked off their insurance.

  • Wagner voted for the 2017 GOP tax bill, which gave $76 billion in tax cuts to Big Pharma.

    • According to AARP, that same year, 35% of Missouri residents stopped taking medication as prescribed due to unaffordable costs.

Missourians are tired of the status quo that Congresswoman Wagner embodies. Jill Schupp has made anti-corruption reform a key priority throughout her campaign because she knows the influence of corporate special interests prevents politicians in Washington from making any progress on the issues hurting their constituents back at home. Schupp will work to get Big Money out of politics to restore the people’s voice in our government and ensure our elected officials are working for those they are supposed to represent, not corporate special interests.
