New Ad: Who is Nick Freitas’ Best Friend? (Hint: He’s a Mega-Donor Tied to Corporate Special Interests)

Sep 09, 2020

End Citizens United (ECU) today launched a new ad campaign in VA-07 exposing Nick Freitas’ close ties to billionaire Richard Uihlein. Freitas is beholden to Uihlien, who paid the way to help Freitas buy his state legislative seat. Meanwhile, Abigail Spanberger, who has kept her pledge not to accept corporate PAC money, is fighting to reform the corrupt system in Washington that puts big money donors ahead of Virginia families.

Titled “Best Friend,” the ad is part of a $355,000 buy and will air on broadcast and cable TV.

“Nick Freitas would be nowhere without his billionaire, out-of-state best friend Richard Uihlein,” said ECU President Tiffany Muller. “Uihlein gave Freitas half a million dollars so that he could buy his way onto the ballot and save his Virginia General Assembly seat. Now, in his run for Congress, Nick Freitas is once again looking to his mega-donor friend to bankroll his campaign in an attempt to defend the corrupt status quo in Washington. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger rejects corporate PAC money and led the charge to pass the biggest anti-corruption bill in a generation. While Freitas is relying on corrupt mega-donors for support, Spanberger is building a grassroots-powered movement to fight for Virginians in Congress.”

Ad Script:
VO: Meet Nick Freitas’ best friend, Richard Uihlein.

VO: Uihlein’s a billionaire out-of-state mega-donor who gave Freitas a half million dollars so Freitas could buy his way onto the ballot.

VO: Freitas and Uihlein––the very worst of the corrupt campaign finance system benefiting billionaires and corporations.

VO: Abigail Spanberger is taking on the system, helping lead the fight for sweeping reforms to stop corruption in both parties. She’s serving the people. Not the special interests.

Unlike dark money groups, ECU is entirely transparent and every penny is disclosed with the Federal Election Commission. Unlike Super PACs, ECU adheres to contribution limits and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average contribution of $14.
